Kula Keiki Ali'i
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Rosemary I. Patterson (December, 1996)
Author: Rosemary I. Patterson
Average review score:

Rowena's review
Author's interpretation of the possible outcome of the effects of the missionary teaching on young Hawaiian Ali'i is filled with Aloha for the people and history of Hawaii. Unfortunately, the the portrayal of thought patterns and situations are NOT within the Hawaiian way of life, beliefs or thinking patterns. Her end analysis is acceptable and probable, her description of means is not.

The Mainland Luau: How to Capture the Flavor of Hawaii in Your Own Backyard
Published in Paperback by Matilija Pr (January, 1997)
Author: Patricia L. Fry
Average review score:

Good if you want to cook a pig in the ground
This book was o.k.; however, it has very few recipes. It provides detailed information on how to cook a pig in the ground for a luau, and has a few recipes (for 25 or more people) that seem fairly simple to make. I purchased the book to get some menu ideas for a luau that I am having and this book did not provide me with that.

Pearl Harbor
Published in Hardcover by Greenhaven Press (September, 1988)
Author: Deborah Bachrach
Average review score:

Pearl Harbor
Well, this is basicly a book about what happened before, during, and after Pearl Harbor. The book begins with an area on how Pearl Harbor began to take place. Then it goes into the explination part about going into the war. This book is probably not the best you'll see on the shelves. The chapters are easy to read, and the words are the right size. Good, real life illistrations are probably the best part about this book. In fact, that is one of the biggest strengths of the book. Summing all that up gives this book a two, maybe three star rating.

The Plum Blossoms: Alexis Albright - Private Investigator
Published in Paperback by Thomas Nelson (September, 1994)
Author: J. M. T. Miller
Average review score:

Heavy handed messages add tedium
Let me first start by saying I am *not* "anti-Christian". Good, now that that's straight, if you are looking for good fiction writing that's appropriate for any reader/age, you can do better than this book.

That this title is out of print is no surprise, when the Bible, the Lord or any other number of Christian references are being made to such a degree that you cannot proceed more than 5 PAGES without being clubbed over the head with it. Further, the writing seems to jump into the pulpit on more than one occasion, getting overly preachy to the point of tedium.

Generally, I can enjoy *any* book, despite most religious or political views, but when the publication openly attacks another group, I need to draw the line. Case in point in this book is when the herione, Alexis Albright, confronts a shady Japanese national, citing his choice in religion (Shintoism) and proudly proclaiming that since "her God is the *only* true god, her God therefore *made* his God". I mean, this is totally unnecessary for the continnuance of the story and demeans those whose views are different, yet end goal is essentially the same. To sum up, unless you enjoy being innundated with biblical and Christian references (and I know a number of Christians who even thought this book was over the top), sniff The Plum Blossoms and move on to greener pastures.

nothing new here
After reading Frommers and Maui Revealed this book had nothing new to offer. A big disapointment. I left it in the hotel room.

Touring Waimea (Kauai Historical Society's Kauai Series #1)
Published in Paperback by Kauai Historical Society (01 January, 1997)
Author: Christine Faye
Average review score:

Worthless
Our family has lived near Waimea for many years. We know it and its history well. We also know Chris Faye who is a wonderful and charming person but totally out of her depth. This booklet should be withdrawn by the Kauai Historical Society at its next meeting. It is disorganized, has at least one error per page and often many, is poorly written, and woefully incomplete. In a word, worthless.

Comment more than a review
I was browsing books on Kauai and would like to write, not a review, but a comment. I live on Kauai and want readers to know that this is a very small island. Those who know the most about the island are reluctant to write an unfavorable review about a book that may be written, literally, by their neighbor. We live the aloha spirit. This may explain the lack of reviews on this book.

California : And Nevada and Hawaii (National Geographic's Driving Guides to America)
Published in Paperback by National Geographic (March, 1998)
Authors: National Geographic Society and Jerry Camarillo, Jr. Dunn
Average review score:

Worthless
I bought this book after enjoying the excellent Guide to Texas and the Middle South from the same series. Unfortunately, the guides are all by different authors, and vary widely in the quality of their content. I've bought four of them so far, and this one is the worst of the bunch.

The Texas book is a "Blue Highways" (i.e., off the beaten track) guide, and contains descriptions of fascinating places that you're not likely to find anywhere else. This one, on the other hand, is no better than those free tourist guides that you find on racks in pancake houses and cheap hotels.

Mr. Dunn is both unimaginative and lazy, and this book suffers from it. The National Geographic generally does much better. They should own up to their mistake and pull this turkey off the market.

Fishes of Guam, Hawaii, Samoa, and Tahiti
Published in Paperback by Periodicals Service Co (January, 1988)
Author: Henry W. Fowler

Scientific paper listing taxonomy of fishes
This is NOT a book. It is a reprint of a scientific catagorization of the fishes of the listed islands. Fish are listed by scientific name only and there are no illustrations or pictures.

Fodor's 1999 Maui Nad Lanai (8th Edition)
Published in Paperback by Fodors Travel Pubns (November, 1998)
Authors: Fodor's and Fodor
Average review score:

Frommer's was much better!
We took our family and went to Maui. Armed with 3 guide books, I was able to compare the content and accuracy of them while on the island.

I found Frommer's book to be a little outdated. More to the point, I found it to be lacking a lot of information that the other two books had. I do not recommend that anyone purchase this book. Maybe their tour books for other islands are better...
